Description
This abstracted amalgamation was created in collaboration with performers Cennellis Baron (NY) and Theodore Alexander (MD). The work incorporates themes of witnessing and transformation. The performers interact with an assortment of clothing as a way of accessing and experimenting with various aspects of self, while playing with the experience of being put upon and having agency. The dancers dress and adorn themselves; they add and strip away garments or ritualistically arrange the clothing. The movement and use of clothing grew out of conversations related to being people of color, code switching, passing, upbringing, coming out, economic status, privilege, and how our present meets our past and way these things inform what we are becoming. While we experience challenges in relation to these topics, we engage in rituals of expressing gratitude and are open and curious about what might be possible. These conversations were the starting point for our creative process and acted as a gentle guide for movement generation and compositional elements.
